What should be preserved and polished?

Thank you for visiting the Charting Our Future website.

The Town is working to refine its Future Land Use Map in order to plan for the future, specifically the year 2049.

Since starting this Charting Our Future Project, we have had many and varied reactions to the idea of Charting Our Future. A few include:
1. “How can we possibly know what will happen by 2049?”
2. “The future is NOW;” and,
3. “But what about autonomous vehicles and the impacts of e-commerce, etc.”

The future is uncertain and filled with things we cannot predict, but in 2017, the Town Council said Plan for the Future. Therefore, we are working with the uncertainty inherent in these times, and thinking about how to make this new Future Land Use Map a document that reflects current community desires knowing that alterations may be needed in the future.

Undoubtedly, 2049 will come, and when the General Assembly authorized a municipal government for Chapel Hill in 1819, they didn’t know what the future would look like. Nonetheless, the General Assembly set the course with that action. Today, we’re asking you what Chapel Hill should aspire to be 230 years after the course was set. Therefore, please look at the Project Area map on the Home page and tell us what should be PRESERVED and POLISHED in these Focus Areas. You can use the Comment box on the Contact Us Page or Drop in to University Place on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM to share what should be Preserved and Polished. We want to hear from you so please “Contact Us” via this website or at future@townofchapelhill.org.
